Experts say parents are to blame for the spike in demand, which is seeing top institutions turn back boys whose names have been down before birth and others refusing bribes to secure a place.

"It's very disappointing, but boys are still treated as more of a premium than girls," said one head of admissions for a top Queensland girls' school, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

She said she was "repeatedly" told by parents seeking places that their first priority was finding a place for their sons.

An academic who surveyed 1500 parents about their school choice said "there was far more anxiety in their language about which school their sons got into than their daughters".
